Hello Fellow Chi. Lover's: I was wanting to ask, "How do you feed a High Protein Food" to a Chihuahua puppy??? (12 wks. old). or even an Adult Chi. for that matter? Such as Evo, Orijen, few others... when the protein is 40% in some. Isn't that like, wayyy too much protein for them, as even the dog food analysis will tell you on certain ones as mentioned above and few others - "Due to the High Protein Content, recommend for Adult or Large Breed Puppy, and the Chi. is anything but that... and yet I see on here that some of you do feed it to your Chi's. Can a few of you help to clarify this for me please? I would appreciate it. Thanks and God bless. Woof... Woof... from Itzy and Petey!! OPPS!!! I think I posted this message in the wrong catagory, sorry... I am a Newbie here and still trying to figure it all out...

It really depends on the individual dog. Some toy breeds do very well with high protein. Others can end up with all sorts of digestive issues. There is no harm at all in giving it a try and seeing how your dog does.

Is it fattening? The vet gave Jinxy a high protein food when she had gastrointestinal problems. In the package it stated that it was high protein- high in calories. Are all high protein foods fattening?

I feed my guys high protein food on the basis that I believe they are predominantly carnivorous omnivores.
Some dogs do not do well on high protein foods as these tend to be low in fibre and can result in constipation, or are too rich and cause diarrhea. I'd recommend giving the foods a try and see how the dogs do.
I highly recommend Orijen or Acana grain-free,.

The Blue Buffalo brand of food (bluebuff.com) has a bag that is called "wilderness" and it is for dogs that are to be fed the amount of protein, vitamins, nutrients, and carbs as they would get in the wild. This is for highly active dogs though. You know...those dogs that look like they NEVER eat, but they do, and they are highly active and have a lot of energy. The Wilderness bag has up to 90% of the protein content the dogs need. It will fatten a dog up if it isn't active enough. a lot of mixed breeds that have hunting dog breeds in them are recommended to eat this foot , even jack russell terriers. Sometimes before dog shows, the owner feeds the wilderness brand for a few weeks to get the dog ready for the show because the coat will get shiny, and everything gets "boosted" with the dog. But a truly good and healthy food should have a high enough protein amount. The blue buffalo brand is made with Humangrade meat, which means that the first ingredient is either Real Chicken, Lamb, Fish, etc. It isn't made with by-product or artificial flavorings. Foods with a real meat ingredient provide a lot of protein for your dog. hope that helped
