At my wits end. My little cross chi has severe dry eye - so severe in fact that last year he underwent an unsuccesful parotid duct transposition. It seems every other month now he is suffering with corneal ulcers - his sight is impaired to the point where he sometimes bumps into things or manages to stop just before he does. Our vet has recomended we seriously consider having both eyes removed - I'm devastated he's only 4 years old!
My poor baby is a medical disaster bless him - not only does he have problems with his eyes but he is epileptic too the thought of him having to undergo surgery again terrifies me - am I being cruel should he have the procedure done or should we wait the time will probably come where there is no option, but at the moment he can still see?

I wish i could help but to me no one can answer that but you and your vet. If you are having second thoughts go have a second opion or go to a Vet whom specailizes in that type of sitiuation. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your chi.
Please let us know how things go if you would.

Nate (my fiance who is graduating from vet school in May) says that typically it is a medically treatable condition and that unless the ulcers are extremely bad, they don't usually recommend removing the eyes. Have you seen a specialist? I highly recommend seeing an ophthalmologist before doing anything drastic. What is your chi crossed with? A smooshy-face breed?

He's X chinese crested . Have contacted the opthalmologist at the teaching university who did his duct transposition so waiting on him to get back to us. He's such a happy little fella can't believe this would be the best course of treatment for him. If he couldn't see at all and his eyes were giving him pain or he was thoroughly miserable then the decision would be easier. Having calmed myself down a bit now I don't think now is the right time for such drastic measures - thanks everyone
