My grandfather was messing around on the net trying to figure out why my chi is so big and he came across some articles on deer chis or deer head chis. i am glad to find out that this is what my Rosalie is. We have been camping all summer and people kept telling me my Rosie wasn't a chi, that she was too big to be a chi that there was something wrong with her. Which made me really angry. there is nothing wrong with her. sure is big alot bigger than any of the chis i have ever seen but who cares. i'm glad she isn't lil and breakable. lol. i was just curious if anyone else had a deer chi and if so they could tell me about them. i am very curious on what the differences are between them.

i wouldnt really use the term deer head as they are just chis that dont conform to type, but my Twiglet would be called a "deer head" she has a longer nose, less of a stop and a more athletic build shes 5lbs and was 4.5lbs until she was spayed

a chi is a chi - big, small, super duper tiny, call them what you like!!! Your Rosalie is no less a chihuahua than anyone elses, dont let anyone tell you any different!!! People who will tell you your dog is not a chihuahua because she's too big or her heads the wrong size is a bit of a snob(sorry if this offends anyone, im just pretty straight forward) I feel strongly about this one having my super sized chi Teddy. There is just more of him to love, sure i cant show him because A) he is neutered and B) he does not fit into the standard!!! Just like people chihuahuas come in all shapes and sizes So all in all, dont feel like you need to call your precious Rosalie a deer head chihuahua to make others more comfortable about her size! 'chihuahua' will do, anything else is just adding to the mouthful

haha you go girl! Camo is almost 8 lbs, he's a big boy, so some people don't think he's a chihuahua! I don't care.. he's my baby and he's not any less chi than my other two babies. We're all humans, no matter what shape, size, color we are..

A Chihuahua is a Chihuahua if it has Chihuahua parents and Chihuahua ancestors quite a few generations back and Im talking a lot of generations back - if another type of breed is introduced as a parent then its a Chihuahua cross , as most of us know.
Dont forget that to get the Long coat Chihuahua , other breeds were used to get the long coat and it took quite a long time for them to be finally recognised as The Chihuahua Long Coat and to have a Standard created for it and to be able to be shown in the ring -
So if your Chi has Chi parents and Chihuahua linage then technically its a Chihuahua wether it meets the standard or not and if its been crossed well its a Chi cross - but who really cares if you love your Chi and you dont want to show it , it doesnt matter - people can be cruel sometimes , dont worry about them -
I have seen some registered Chis in the ring on occasion that I would never show - to me they would be a pet not a show dog - but they are still Chihuahuas.
In my case as a show person/breeder some of my Chihuahuas will meet the Standard and some will not and a couple of times I have had in a litter a Chihuahua that has been huge or one thats been very tiny - ones I would not show or breed from - but still wonderful Chis and they deserve a good loving home just like the Show Dogs and Im very fussy who I place them with so they are just as precious to me as the ones that will be Show Dogs .
As the Chihuahua breed developed it has evolved into the Chihuahua of today - breeders are still trying to meet the standard to the letter , so changes in any breed will be noticeable as the years go by - a lot of the earlier Chihuahuas had the longer nose /less stop/ leaner body and I think to kinda know when people were describing the Chi they had , they used the term Deer Head as opposed to the Apple head so you would quickly know what they were talking about .
I dont mind that earlier style at all , although I really love and prefer the Chi of today and try to breed for that lovely Apple head/stop etc -
I have always said it was a shame they didnt create a Standard for this Deer Head style - if they did then they could be offically called - Deer Head - and you would be seeing them in the show ring today in thier own breed . So it is a pity it didnt happen .
even if it was something just like The Chinese Crested Breed over here in Oz who have the two body types in thier standard - The Cobby type or the Athletic type of body - they have incorporated the two body types in thier standard - I think thats great )
Goodness I have raved on again - I do this on occasion sorry - but like Shaz who says it like it is always ( good on ya Kiddo ) it irks me that people can be so cruel about our beloved dogs and yes as Shaz says some breeders and people ( not all mind you ) can be quite snobbish and with no right to be, because Im pretty sure they have bred pets as well , (and they are still Chihuahuhas).
So I agree with Shaz dont worry about classing your Chihuahua in a style - really as it stands today offically there are only two types - Smooth Coat or Long Coat and Im sure Rosalie is one of those .
When I have people give me thier so called expert knowledge on one of my Chis and I have not asked for thier opinion or imput -, I normally just say - with tongue in cheek -
Well every one is entittled to thier opinion I guess . and I just walk away -
but if they are particularly obnoxious types and really carry on and they are getting up my nose.
I say -
Well every one is entittled to thier opinion I guess but I really dont want to hear yours thanks all the same .
it usually helps me stay nice and calm inside - I havent always been as polite - but Im much older and maybe a little wiser now ( I hope ) and I dont want to spoil my day by getting agitated over the words of other people - dont let any one spoil your day or your fun times with your sweet Chi, if you can - let it ride , let it go over your head - after all they dont have that wonderful Rosalie that you have , so your a much luckier and happier a person than they are .
cheers
