Hi, I just took in this little girl from an older lady who came into my work(im a groomer) and felt HORRIBLE because she had let her dog get so over weight. Well she's just the sweetest thing, and she looks like a potatoe. She weighs about 11 pounds and she should be around 4-5 pounds. I have been walking her at least once a day for about 20 minutes and feeding her once in the morning and once at night- i feed her a little over a 1/4 cup total in a day. I feed Purina One, i know its not the best, but i have 3 dogs and i get it for free! Anything else i can be doing for her? Thank you.

Jinxy (my chi) gains weight very easily. Anyway, when I had to put her on a diet my vet gave me a few tips. He said that similarly to people, an overweight dog needs to exercise more and eat less. He told me to reduce her food gradually and to increase her exercise gradually. Too little food means that an overweight dog will be hungry and too much exercise ( like walking) could be very tiring. Also the vet could give you a special food for obese dogs. Congrats on your new chi. What is her name?

The best way is to just give her a controled amount and short walks. It will take a while for the weight to come off. Slow and steady is the most healthy way to get it off. When I was trying to get the weight off of a new addition the vet said to go ahead and feed a normal food just controlling how much she gets will probably be enough for her to lose the weight.
