Using a small stud can give you a percentage of smaller pups like the dad and then you can also get a percentage of big pups like the mum or a size that is like their ancestors grandparents etc - so its a guessing game with genetics - my chis all defy the chart if you go from birth weight - but doubling the weight at 12 weeks seems to be closer to the right eventual weight -I find from my personal experience . I know its just a guide- the chart- so Im always record their weight regularly through development and its usually close to what the parents or grandparents etc were like depending on what genes are passed down . I only have one heavy large chi and its a girl -so I will be using smaller stud but can never tell if she will throw a large one or two like herself - we will see - shes due to be mated for the first time very soon .

At the vet yesterday Winnie weighed 3 lbs at 11 weeks. She gained 1 poind in 4 weeks. My breeder said she should be between 6-8. Does that sound about right?

I have a new baby chi ( Treasure) coming home in about two weeks. When I saw him at 5 weeks he was 1 pound. He is also the runt of the litter. I was hoping this was maybe a guarantee that he would be smaller than the others of his litter. His mother is around 8 pounds and his father is about 4.5 - 5 pounds. Does this mean he may be smaller than the dad?

I highly doubt that he will be any smaller than his dad knowing that his mother is 8lbs. If I had to guess I would say he will be 5.5. Your best bet would be to double his weight at 12 weeks and that will give you a decent estimate. At 5 weeks it is still too difficult to acurately chart.
My runt of this litter is the second largest at almost 9 weeks!!!

I never go on birth weights youll have to wait and see -and personally I feel like many others that its all about the genetics in the background - sometimes their are problems that can dictate growth patterns also .
The 12 week rule of thumb is usually a pretty fair guide but there are always exceptions in anything for various reasons .

At 9 weeks old, Kami weighs about 9 oz. Malley has to weigh atleast a pound now. I can see Kami staying itty bitty, but Malley is going to surpass that. They're going back for another round of shots tomorrow so I'll give yall the exact weight! I'm curious to find out how big they will get.

Are the weights that I gave above little? Is that normal for chi's to be that size?

I was just talking to my hubby about the others and how much theirs weigh, and I remembered that Kali only weighed 3.5 lbs pregnant. She was tiny, so I figure Kami will be too, but Malley is Camo's son. He's going to be bigger I think, he's a stout lil pup! I kinda freaked out when I started reading the others weight, so I had to ask.

Do you know how big the average pup is at 9-10 weeks?

Well, a good test is that when they are 12 weeks you usually double their weight and that will be their full grown weight.
So my guess is that they won't be much more then 3-4 lbs

Kandice my pups are huge. The are the same age as your babies and they are all around 2.5 lbs. Then again they are chubby while your babies are lean. Also my Tali is normally 6.5 lbs and Tito is almost 5.5lbs. I think an average puppy would be in the middle between your itty itty babies and my big ol fatties!
